| Andrew Calhoun writes with a paradoxical combination of incandescent intellect and unstudied magic. He is both a lightning rod for "the unconscious rightness of intuitive connection" and a perpetual student of songcraft with deep respect for both tradition and innovation.
The Chicago Tribune calls him "one of contemporary folk's top songsmiths," and the Oregonian says, "he's blessed with a resonant baritone, crystalline fingerpicking, and a writer's ear." |

| Tom Catmull has earned a comfortable reputation as one of Montana’s premier songwriters and most compelling performers. His shows are split these days between intimate solo acoustic venues and blowing the roof off of honky-tonks across the state with his 5 piece Americana band, Tom Catmull and the Clerics. His music is a fresh, rugged mix of blues, rock, country, and Americana. |
| |
| Anna Coogan & North 19 | north19.com |
| The alt-country/Americana of Seattle's Anna Coogan and North 19 has been getting rave reviews all over the Northwest and beyond. Kurt B. Reighley of the Stranger says, "Based on her powerful pipes and the catch in her throat, she could just as easily pass for a native of Nashville... circa the late-'60s heyday of Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette. Like those First Ladies, Coogan isn't afraid to stretch her wings stylistically, too; the title track of Glory boasts a reassuring gospel quality, and elements of blues and rock also underpin much of her rootsy material." And Aftertaste Magazine wrote: “Coogan lets loose a paralyzing and smooth voice. Her range is unmatched and her songs are sweet-natured illusions of loneliness, redemption and romanticism of old fashioned Americana. The full-band sound is rich with melodic banjo and acoustic noodlings that are reminiscent of some older Bob Dylan works.” |

Meet Crooked Still, the hot young alternative bluegrass group on a mission to bend the boundaries of traditional music. The unlikely combination of banjo, cello, and double-bass drives this low lonesome band, whose captivating vocals and high-wire solos have enraptured audiences all over North America and Ireland since 2001.
Four very unique musical personalities merge to form Crooked Still. Aoife O'Donovan's refined, sultry vocals float over Rushad Eggleston's rumbling cello riffs, Dr. Gregory Liszt's futuristic four-finger banjo rolls and Corey DiMario's pulsing bass lines. The resulting acoustic fusion can warp a traditional American tune to the brink of unrecognizability without sacrificing the authenticity of the original sources.
"State-of-the-art musical chops with a deep understanding of American traditional music's raw melodic grace... Their darkly gorgeous debut CD reveals them as both fun-loving revolutionaries and sweet traditionalists." - The Boston Globe |

| With her warm, graceful voice and her knack for cutting "into a subject...with a diamond-edged blade**," Edie Carey grabs hold of her audiences and doesn't let go until she steps off the stage. While her songs are what first draw listeners in, it's what she says in between that keeps them coming back. Carey's wry and self-mocking humor, coupled with her ability to tell a great story, makes audiences feel as though they have just spent the evening with a very close friend. Given the triple threat of her magnetic stage presence, heart-grabbing songs, and almost unearthly voice, it's no wonder that the word about Carey is traveling fast. This show will celebrate the release of Edie's fourth studio album, "Another Kind of Fire." |

The Village Voice said, "Flynn adds a smoky soulful voice… marrying styles from bluegrass to pop and instrumentation from dobro to drum beats.” Her latest release is "Live at MIssissippi Studios" featuring one of Portland’s best alternative bluegrass bands, Sneakin' Out. |

“An excellent third album… Americana doesn’t get much finer” (4 ****)
– Q Magazine
"An album full of gravelly, gorgeously rolling poems about weather, trains, and love... exceptional."
- The New Yorker
“Impossible to take your ears away... a singular talent, an important new voice... striking intimacy and naturalness of tone... a brilliant collection of songs... [an] artistic and masterful achievement."
- The Stereo Times
“Jeffrey Foucault is a young man with an old soul… contemporary and timeless.”
- The New York Times
"Not that Foucault doesn't know the dark side of being from the U.S.A. It's hinted at in the lyrics and also in Foucault's voice, a young man's baritone that's been roughed up by the grit of creation, revealing layers of wisdom and wonder... [he] can conjure demons as adroitly as his Americana heroes Chris Smither and Townes van Zandt."

Danny’s a songwriter’s songwriter - with a literacy and complexity, and an underlying humanity, rare in this age of sound bite attention span marketeering. His tunes are wire frames draped with sheets of poetry. He has some of the qualities of the greats - from Townes Van Zandt’s ageless and understated sincerity, to Dylan’s topical relevance and wry sharp eye for the allusively obvious, to Dave Carter’s quiet spiritual assurity and sense that each song was plucked whole from a tree more than labored through, line-by-line with pen and ink. And it all leaves you with that Leonard Cohen after-taste, that there’s something here worth studying as much as listening to.
“He is hands down one of the best living musician/poets that I am aware of.” - Bob Thiele, Nashville Producer |

"The bluesy folk-rock tunes, burnished croon (and) serious guitar chops of Massachusetts singer Natalia Zukerman demand your attention."
- TimeOut New York
"Natalia Zukerman comes from a family of noted classical musicians (her mother, Eugenia, is a flutist; her father, Pinchas, is a violinist; and her sister, Arianna, is an opera singer), but she has chosen to forsake grand performance halls for a dusty resophonic slide guitar in small clubs. She has nimble fingers capable of picking upward of thirty notes per measure, and when she sings she can switch from scat to swoon in the course of a glissando."

"Boston's Edie Carey delivers another burning catchy album of Americana roots-oriented folk-rock. Her vocal delivery is tender yet interesting and brazen... Far from common, Edie Carey is a young female artist that deserves the recognition of being a bright spot in the pop world."
- Smother.net
Drawing comparison to folk-pop artists such as Catie Curtis, Carey's songs consistently maintain the delicate balance between commercial potential and a true indie spirit. Carey may have called her label Accidental Poet, but on the evidence of “Another Kind of Fire,” her musical success has more to do with talent than good fortune."

Timeless, retro and rootsy songwriter Eilen Jewell and band will be in Portland. Check out the freshly signed, “Love you, Loretta Lynn” autograph on Eilen’s guitar. (Eilen’s band prepped for a show they opened for Ms. Lynn by playing 35 Loretta covers, undercover at a Boston bar, the night before.) They do a killer cover of ‘Fist City’, along with a healthy dose of original songs and a few select covers of Charlie Rich, Dylan and Eric Anderson.
"Sometimes as darkly damaged as Lucinda Williams, at others as defiant and teasing as prime Peggy Lee and always authentically Americana in the Gillian Welch tradition, Jewell knows just how much emotion to give - and, crucially, to hold back - in the lyrics. This is her first labeled release, and she's mighty good."
- LA Daily News
"While stylistically she moves about, her voice retains its light, moody intelligence -- qualities her excellent stripped-down band of guitar, steel guitar, double bass and drums matches with easy assurance."

| Laura Love| lauralove.net |
Singer, songwriter, bassist, and published author, Laura Love has thousands of fans throughout North America and Europe. Billboard Magazine continually includes her CDs on their annual top ten lists and the first time she performed on the East Coast was at Carnegie Hall. Laura released her 10th CD in 2007 on her label, Octoroon Biography. Titled NeGrass, it is an acoustic collection of traditional and original field hollers, Negro spirituals and folk songs, produced by Barbara Lamb and recorded in Nashville with some of the finest bluegrass musicians in North America. NeGrass features Laura singing and playing bass with Tim O’Brien, Tracy Nelson, Barbara Lamb, Jeff Autry, Scott Vestal, Rob Ickes, Mike Bub and Alice Vestal, many of whom are Grammy and IBMA award winners.
Laura is a rare recording artist - authentic and deeply rooted, with an extremely diverse appeal. Her management, publicists, record labels and the media all struggle to define Laura’s style. She is an African-American funk bassist with an astonishing voice, who is equally influenced by blues and bluegrass, jazz, folk, gospel, reggae and country. Laura sometimes refers to her style as “folk-funk”, “Afro-Celtic” or “hip-Alachian”.
“Her music is exuberant...she conveyed the fervor of someone reaching out with an almost frenzied joy to seize the strands of a confusing life and weave them into a coherent, life-affirming vision.” - New York Times
“(One of) 40 artists who will shake the world. The clincher is her live show...She’s that rare artist who can slip from sensitive folk to hip-hop without skipping a beat.” - Utne Reader
“Startlingly original. Her music is spare, yet striking. Her voice is ripe, supple, strong, and impossible to ignore.” - Billboard Magazine

"Shindell is a master builder of songs, yet always leading listeners toward the emotional essence of the moment or character he is evoking. As with all master craftsmen, knowing what to leave out is as important to him as what he puts in. Shindell has uncanny sense of the theater of a song, building his ballads sparely and subtly, set to sweeping graceful melodies."
- The Boston Globe
"Mr. Shindell has been building a following on the solo-folkie circuit through the 1990's... At times, his voice recalls James Taylor, Gordon Lightfoot or Michael Stipe; he stretches words as if he's thinking hard about what they represent. The tone is reflective, but the dilemmas and disappointments couldn't be more vivid."
- The New York Times
"Shindell tells great stories with an eye for critical detail while never losing sight of the big picture. He works a well-worn stretch of singer-songwriter pavement, but his wonderfully spiritual lyrical sense and intimate compositions ultimately distinguish him."

"Any fool can write a love-gone wrong song; it takes a real genius to write a love-gone-right one. No urban songwriter does that better than Curtis."
- The Boston Globe
"There’s a sophisticated simplicity about Curtis’s singing and songwriting that brings to mind Suzanne Vega." - Rhythms Magazine
"Curtis's songs are beautifully and deceptively well crafted, her production tastefully understated, and her singing so heartbreakingly pure, pained, and devoid of artifice as to suggest she knows not only your secrets, but your soul." - Amazon.com

| Peter Mulvey | petermulvey.com |
Peter Mulvey's latest album, Notes from Elsewhere (Signature Sounds) is a retrospective collection of the very best songs Mulvey has written and performed over his 15 year recording career. Recorded solo in a studio, these are fresh takes on songs that have become fan and critic favorites over the years. While Mulvey's previous band-backed albums showcased the songs, these solo versions allow each song to shine on its own demonstrating Peter's strengths as a songwriter.
"The subtle power of his voice, a husky, hushed baritone... understated, at once sophisticated and intimate... as cover-worthy as Randy Newman, Elvis Costello and Dar Williams."
- THE WASHINGTON POST
"Peter Mulvey is consistently the most original and dynamic of the US singer-songwriters to tour these shores… A phenomenal performer with huge energy, a quick fire, quirky take on life, and an extraordinary guitar style… a joy to see."
- THE IRISH TIMES
"A voice lush and hushed that occasionally sinks into a whisper... imagery made all the more haunting by guitarist/co-writer David Goodrich, whose sundry string bending ranges from loose ramblings around the neck... to freeform explorations that recall John Scofield... surrealistic beauty."
- ROLLING STONE.com |
| |
| Gregory Alan Isakov | thefreight.net |
"Gregory Alan Isakov proudly calls himself a folk artist, and while that's broadly accurate, it's also a tad limiting. Because while some music fans might not consider themselves fans of "folk," they still bow at the alters of Jeff Tweedy, Andrew Bird and Jolie Holland. And now you can add Isakov to that list."
- Denver Post
"His music coasts on the same subtle strength and gravity that Bruce Springsteen built 'Nebraska' on. Hints of everyone from Steve Earle to Gillian Welch also creep into Isakov's twangy, shaded folk, but it's his absolute ease-the man sounds like he's swimming through his own songs-that makes his new 'That Sea, The Gambler' such a stunning disc."

Annabelle is a former member of the Wailin' Jennys, a band that won several Juno Awards for their album Firecracker, which featured four of Annabelle's songs, and built quite a buzz during her tenure, touring internationally, playing festivals, and appearing frequently on Prairie Home Companion. Annabelle has released a stunning solo album, Resilience, which features Bruce Cockburn, Mary Gauthier, Michael Jerome Browne, Julie Wolf (Ani DiFranco's keyboard player), and a slew of other great players. It's getting rave reviews.
"Fiercely talented... Chvostek has a sultry voice you can't and won't forget."
- Xtra, Toronto
"Annabelle doesnt fake the folk. She freaks it."
- The Montreal Gazette
"The Wailin' Jennys' loss is the world's gain. Annabelle Chvostek has created a sensational solo album. Chvostek is a ridiculously talented musician from Montreal by way of Toronto who plays guitar, mandolin, violin, organ, accordion and who knows what else. Vocally, she's up to any task, from pop highs to gritty blues lows. On Resilience, Chvostek's original compositions are full of aching desire dressed in poetry and rendered with a musical imagination that seems to know no bounds."

Armed with an acoustic guitar and her songbook filled with pure poetry, Anaïs Mitchell is instilling youthful passion into spirited folk songs for a new generation. After seeing a few of Anaïs’ captivating concerts, Ani DiFranco signed the artist to her label, Righteous Babe Records. Spilling over with worldly metaphors, intense emotions and unshakeable reverence to the art of song, Anais's label debut, The Brightness, shimmers with creative spark.
“A songwriter of startling clarity and depth, equally skilled at turning a melody or lyrical phrase into what you didn't know you needed until you heard it... fearlessly emotive...like Dylan, Cohen, and Welch, Mitchell weaves her stories into an effortlessly beautiful and cohesive tapestry with the skill of an artisan's carpenter, showing no seams.”
- ACOUSTIC GUITAR
“Girlishly sprite and brimming with innocence... brings to mind the hippie-throwback charm of Victoria Williams, though... people more commonly note a resemblance to '80s pop star Cyndi Lauper.”

Antje Duvekot ( Aunt-ya Doo-va-kot) has solidified her reputation as one of America’s top emerging singer songwriters with “Big Dream Boulevard” her debut studio release. The CD was produced by Seamus Egan, founder of the Irish super group, Solas. The project was released on acclaimed songwriter Ellis Paul’s label, Black Wolf Records and has quickly attracted international attention for Antje. This release was voted “#1 Folk Release of 2006” by the Boston Globe and was named to the “Top10 Releases of the Year” by National Public Radio’s, Folk Alley.
"This is a brilliant, brilliant album. I have had this reaction once in the last 10 years and that was the first time I heard Patty Griffin.”
- Dave Marsh, Rolling Stone
“Duvekot has gotten hotter, faster than any local songwriter in recent memory. Her songs feel at once fresh faced and firmly rooted, driven by the whispery sensuality of her voice. She believes in the redemptive power of the shared secret; and is utterly unafraid to mine the darkest corners of her life for songs that turn fear into resilience and isolation into community.”
- The Boston Globe
"When I first heard Antje I knew I was witnessing something very special. She creates an entire, detailed world in verse, and takes you there with beautiful and understated melody. Her songs are stunning paintings of color and shade and always generate the heat and light that real art should. In an unpoetic and 'in your face' world, she is lyrical and subtle."
- Neil Dorfsman, producer of Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Sting |

Kris Delmhorst| krisdelmhorst.com |
Kris Delmhorst's latest album Shotgun Singer began as an act of solitary creation. Holed up in a rural cabin with minimal recording gear and a houseful of instruments, Delmhorst recorded her new songs alone, in layers of intimate vocals which she combined with electric and nylon guitars, cellos, keyboards, loops, and percussion. With the core of each song thus established, she brought in a diverse cast of players to add sparse backing lines of drums, keys, guitar, and vinyl-based samples, and enlisted co-producer Sam Kassirer (Josh Ritter) in arrangement and mixing. The result is collection of songs fully realized and even lush at times, but
retaining a hushed intensity, a spirit of lo-fi intimacy and unhurried exploration. Adventurous, elegant, lucid, and haunting, the record is the work of a seasoned musician who has found a musical language, a means of expression, equal to her vision.
With a back catalog that includes two darkly rollicking roots records produced by Morphine's Billy Conway, and the 2006 release Strange Conversation, a vibrant collection of Americana songs inspired by the work of famous poets (a remarkable album...as seamless and brave as it is brilliantly creative - Irish Times), Kris Delmhorst has parlayed a decade of successful cross country and trans-Atlantic touring into one of the most distinct voices in American music. With Shotgun Singer, Delmhorst has trained that voice on a series of gracefully open lyrics and figures that transcend genre, ranging into the borderlands between indie-rock andfolk, that nameless territory inhabited by such hard-to-classify artists as Laura Veirs, Feist, Iron & Wine, Nina Nastasia, and Juana Molina.
Delmhorst is "a dynamic vocalist and songwriter of immense power and range...rich, sultry vocals and swinging rhythms"
- Seth Rogovoy, The Berkshire Eagle |
Jeffrey Foucault | jeffreyfoucault.com |
Holed up in Iowa City for the coldest week of the year, Jeffrey Foucault teamed with legendary blues guitar player and producer Bo Ramsey (Greg Brown, Lucinda Williams) to create Ghost Repeater, a country and blues album at the crossroads of love and lament.
"Jeffrey Foucault incorporates the best of the Americana, alt-country and roots-rock genres into his third solo album... Those who recall Bruce Springsteen in the pre-"Born to Run" days will hear echoes of the Boss in Foucault's lyrics, as well as the best of the Texas troubadours, including Joe Ely and Butch Hancock. But there's nothing derivative about Foucault's haunting allusions... the fundamental truths that emerge are undeniable... Musically, Foucault has created a harmonious minimalist sound that's driven by his acoustic strumming and the economical Mark Knopfler-style electric fretwork of veteran Iowa guitarist Bo Ramsey... there's a tumbling tumbleweeds sensibility to Ghost Repeater reminiscent of the finest Dust Bowl anthems." - The Chicago Sun Times

Sometymes Why| sometymeswhy.com |
Sometymes Why is a mesmerizing trio of modern-day sirens. Their vocal intensity, sparse arrangements, and passionate lyricism whirl into the air and cut a cyclone's path through the heart. Aoife, Ruth and Kristin have honed their recipe for ruthless tenderness with utter disregard for conformity or convention. Their songs tell the secret tales of our own lives and beg us to believe in the power of revelation.
You might know the three women of Sometymes Why as singers with one of their other bands. Aoife O'Donovan (Crooked Still), Kristin Andreassen (Uncle Earl) and Ruth Ungar Merenda (The Mammals) have been at the center of a creative revolution in the acoustic stringband scene for the past few years.
With Sometymes Why, Aoife, Kristin & Ruth create music that moves past the "stringband" label entirely. They sing their own songs and back each other up on Wurlitzer, glockenspiel, high hat & tambourine. They appeal to a part of their audience (and a part of themselves) that's more aligned with Feist, Joni Mitchell, and Bessie Smith than by Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys. |

Caroline Herring| carolineherring.com |
Caroline Herring digs deep—deep into the rich soil of American roots music for her sound, and deep into the recesses of her own consciousness for her themes. The musically understated, psychologically intense songs of this Atlanta-based Mississippi native ponder the eternal verities while probing the complex nature of contemporary existence; she delivers them in a fine-grained alto replete with the residue of hard-earned insight.
On Lantana, her beautiful and eloquent third album (Signature Sounds), Herring fills the listener’s heart with hope one moment and sends a chill down the spine the next. This pivotal album, which documents a personal and artistic crossroads for its author, cements her status as a truth teller, and no matter how bitter or disturbing the story leading to the truth may be, she approaches it clear-eyed and straight-on, getting down to the nub of it with quiet tenacity. No wonder fellow artist Dar Williams, who co-headlined a European tour with Herring in 2006, described her as “the elusive ‘real thing.’”
"Crafted with timeless elegance and graceful confidence, Caroline Herring's Lantana is the best modern Southern Gothic since Lucinda Williams' Sweet Old World."
- Austin Chronicle
“The possessor of a gorgeous voice that is both pure and earthy, the Mississippi-born singer/songwriter has, in Wellspring, delivered a roots-oriented album that begs to be heard, right from the opening Trace. An acoustic offering, it paints a description of Natchez farm life and sharecropping memories that is stunning in its sheer simplicity. From there, she moves around the South both lyrically and in terms of reference, strutting ably throughout her Texas Two Step but reserving her most potent observations for Mistress, the story of an ill-used slave. Remarkable.”
- Q Magazine (England) - Four star review

Meg Hutchinson | meghutchinson.com |
Meg Hutchinson (who opened for Laura Love's September show in Portland) is a lyric-based contemporary acoustic songwriter. Her influences include poet Mary Oliver, songwriter Shawn Colvin, and mood maker David Gray. Originally from rural western-most Massachusetts, Hutchinson now lives in the Boston area. Although only 29, she has already won numerous songwriting awards in the US, Ireland and UK, including recognition from prestigious competitions at Merlefest, NewSong, Kerrville, Falcon Ridge and Rocky Mountain Folks Fests. She recently signed with Red House Records for the March 4th release of her new album "Come Up Full."
Hutchinson’s new CD of original songs confirms that she is one of the great voices of the next generation of acoustic musicians. Come Up Full is a lyrically rich record about encountering good things when you least expect them. Amidst war, loss and heartbreak, Hutchinson’s songs hold the promise of love, hope and homecomings. In songs like “Ready,” “Home” and “Come Up Full” she sings about our universal ability to overcome life’s most trying times. An honest writer, Hutchinson does not shy away from the hard topics. With a poet’s sensibility, Hutchinson’s songs are laced with a weathered but unselfconscious optimism, a love of language and of the natural world.
“A master of introspective ballads.”
- Performing Songwriter
“Elegant and free-floating melodies that feel both modern and rooted.”

Myshkin's Ruby Warblers| myshkinsrubywarblers.com |
Myshkin writes songs with a dark and subtle wit, raw honesty, and a painter’s eye, and incorporates far-flung musical ideas with a passionate ease. She creates an uncommonly timeless modern music with the aid of an ever-evolving crew of genius gamblers whose fortés range from tango to electronica, old time to modern classical to jazz. Her band Myshkin’s Ruby Warblers was born in New Orleans, where she was based for nine years before moving to Portland, Oregon in 2002.
Myshkin has released five critically acclaimed records, most recently Corvidae, been honored with several music industry awards, and toured internationally for well over a decade, performing and recording with dozens of artists, including The Be Good Tanyas, Shawn Mullins, and Split Lip Rayfield.
Myshkin took a year off from music in 2008 to build a cob and straw bale studio in the mountains of southern Oregon, and is currently working to finish her latest and most ambitious record, heart thumping to get back on the road. Myshkin plays an eighty-year old Martin tenor guitar, a vintage Gibson six-string, and a jumbo Lowden acoustic. But her voice is her finest instrument, and she wields it like a fortune-teller, an acrobat, a hunter, a gift.
"Both lyrical and politically pointed. A rich blend topped with her broad-ranging, keening voice."
- The Washington Post
"Myshkin's voice is not to be taken lightly. A gorgeous rich alto infused with natural drama and melancholy, and best applied to her own songs: hushed one-act plays that speak volumes."
- The New Orleans Times Picayune
"Dark, smoky folk-jazz. Gripping, affecting and disquieting."

Chic Gamine, the roguishly charming Winnipeg/Montreal-based vocal quintet, has been serenading its audiences since the summer of 2007. By complete coincidence, the group is composed of the 5 “A’s”: singers Ariane Jean, Andrina Turenne, Alexa Dirks, Annick Brémault and drummer and percussionist Alexandre Sacha Daoud. Over the years, its members have been integral parts of a multitude of projects, notably, R’n’B/Soul sensation little boy boom, Brazilian Funk/Pop flavoured Gaïa and International Independent Music Award laureate, World Vocal ensemble Madrigaïa.
With a solo percussionist as their main musical support, Chic Gamine use their voices as instruments, effortlessly launching into intricate string arrangements, bass-heavy rhythm sections and lush harmonies. These multifariously talented songwriters create a sound that resonates with soul, passion and an unabashedly random and sometimes downright peculiar brand of humour that reels audiences in and leaves them begging for more. Gospel, Soul, R’n’B, 50’s Doo-Wop, Brazilian forro and French Chanson are infused into the voices and rhythms of these 5 schemers and effervescent songmakers. And the whole is liberally doused with the most total, sibylline insouciance unique to Chic Gamine…
"They are a musical tempest. Chic Gamine's live performance made me feel that I had just witnessed a very important musical moment. Bravo!"

They did covers like Queen, Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, and Radiohead, and sold out shows in thousand-seat theaters. The Dahoo Chorus included a full band of top-notch musicians like Dave Camp (Stereovision), Carl (Solovox), and Jason Wells (Trashcan Joe). Janette says, "It was definitely a highlight of my life." After the Dahoo Chorus came Emily Post, a five-girl wall of sound (formed by former Dahoo members), mostly accepella, with a smattering of instrumentation. They performed as a band for about two years.
Janette is very excited to be playing out more as a solo artist. Her full rich voice and compelling presence combine with a sparkling sense of humor and fun that will make you feel immediately at home. Janette is the owner of Portland's popular Tin Shed Garden Cafe.

Annabelle Chvostek & Myshkin
Tuesday, June 16th, 8pm
Mississippi Studios, Portland

Annabelle Chvostek| annabelle.org |
Annabelle Chvostek is a former member of the Canadian trio The Wailin' Jennys and a songwriting collaborator of Bruce Cockburn. Myshkin is a former Road Dog Diva and sometime Ruby Warbler. Both are stunning songwriters and solo performers. This June they are joining forces for a co-bill tour of the west coast together, and by the end of it, we should be hearing some great harmonies and collaborations. Together or separately, these are two of the best female singer-songwriters on the planet today, a highly recommended show.
"Ms. Chvostek won our hearts and minds... Her show was one of those magical, chemistry-connected sets, with a sense of discovery attached... Singing with pluck and precision, Ms. Chvostek exudes organic musicality, whether when digging into folky roots music or art-pop turf…" - Santa Barbara News-Press Nov 2008

"Myshkin's voice is not to be taken lightly. A gorgeous rich alto infused with natural drama and melancholy, and best applied to her own songs: hushed one-act plays that speak volumes." - The New Orleans Times Picayune

Antje Duvekot| antjeduvekot.com |
Antje Duvekot (pronounced: Aunt-yuh Doo-va-kot) is one of the brightest singer-songwriters to rise out of Boston's competitive acoustic music scene. She has released her second studio album, "The Near Demise of the High Wire Dancer" on Black Wolf Records. Antje chose one of her favorite songwriters, Richard Shindell to produce the album. Richard lent his talent to the record and brought in well respected musicians such as John Gorka, Lucy Kaplansky and Victor Krauss.
"What a blessing to have worked with someone as talented as Antje. With a voice like hers, and songs as good as these, a producer (especially a first-time producer!) just tries to get out of the way, to do no harm, and to let the artist speak for herself."
- Richard Shindell
"The Near Demise of the High Wire Dancer" demonstrates why, according to The Boston Globe, "Antje Duvekot's provocative, dark-eyed ballads are becoming the
talk of the folk world. Duvekot has gotten hotter, faster than any local songwriter in recent memory."
The songs on the album reflect both Duvekot's personal journeys and her observations of those of others. Antje remarks "I've come to find that writing about someone else's struggles or happiness feels just as cathartic as writing about my own."
"As far as I can tell, Antje is the whole package… I've had this reaction once in the past 10 years, and that was the first time I heard Patty Griffin... Antje has proven once again that she ranks with the most intense and beautiful songwriter on the planet."
- Dave Marsh former Editor of Rolling Stone and XM/ Sirius Satellite Host
Along with 7 new songs, Antje and Richard decided to add studio versions of some of her best known songs such as, "Merry Go Round", which was used in a Bank of America national TV ad campaign as well as radio favorite "Long Way". "Since I first recorded this older material live, I have become a better performer", Antje explains "I decided to revive the songs that were worthy and produce them properly so that I should not be such a bad mother to them".
Singer songwriter Ellis Paul says "Antje is the rare artist that can write about the social and the personal in the same breath. She is as understated as she is wise and her songs go down mentally as well as soulfully. Her voice has a sound of innocence and naivety which makes razor sharp insights into the human condition."

Peter Mulvey| petermulvey.com |
“I like making records,” reflects songwriter Peter Mulvey, “but my job is the live show: getting up in a room and taking people somewhere.” On this tour, Peter presents his 12th CD, Letters From A Flying Machine.
Born, raised, and living now in Milwaukee, WI, Peter Mulvey is a singer/songwriter/guitarist who honed his skills on the streets of Dublin and in the subways of Boston. Peter defies the word "folk" and stamps acoustic/alternative music with his own edgy, funky style. Said The Irish Times: "Peter Mulvey is consistently the most original and dynamic of the US singer-songwriters to tour these shores... a phenomenal performer with huge energy, a quickfire quirky take on life, an extraordinary guitar style (somewhere between Leo Kottke's delicacy and Ani DiFranco's attack), and lyrically rewarding material... a joy to see."
"This disc is actually more like a live show than any record I have made," says Mulvey. On Letters From a Flying Machine, his articulate, inquisitive songcraft serves as a guide, leading the listener on a thoughtfully constructed journey in search of answers to some formidable existential questions and ending with, hopefully, a tiny but shining epiphany. "Through the songs and stories on this album, I'm trying to figure out what actually lasts a long time,: Mulvey explains. "So it is set up to listen all the way through to take this voyage. I want the listener to hear the end of the album differently than they heard the beginning. It's a record that's actually about something. This is an old human statement, I know, but when all else has crumbled, love is the only thing that is real." His twelfth album, Letters From a Flying Machine heralded a drastic change in Mulvey's process. Richly acoustic, with a hint of rustic clatter befitting the album's themes of antiquity, obsolescence, and progress, Letters From a Flying Machine puts Mulvey's nimble guitar front and center, framing it with contributions from several key associates. It's also the first Mulvey album to feature spoken word pieces, a long time staple of his live performances. |
Krista Detor | kristadetor.com |
Krista Detor's debut album, Mudshow, was released in 2006 to international critical acclaim, garnering an average of 4+ star reviews, and reaching the #1 spot on the Euro-Americana Chart. The follow-up record, Cover Their Eyes, released in 2007, made similar waves in the European and U.S. musical worlds and, by 2009, in 3 short years, she has rapidly expanded her world audience and musical standing. She defies genre, but the quality of her writing has been compared to the likes of Leonard Cohen, Laura Nyro, Tom Waits and Joni Mitchell, company she is more than happy to keep. Touring the U.S. and Europe consistently, Detor has shared stages with Joan Armatrading, Suzanne Vega, Loudon Wainwright, Sam Phillps, Colin Linden, Chris Wood, Luka Bloom, Slaid Cleaves, Peter Mulvey, The Wailing Jennys, Jakob Dylan, Jez Lowe, Carrie Newcomer, Lucy Kaplansky, and John Gorka, among others and travels with her partner and producer, David Weber.

Richard Shindell| richardshindell.com |
An expatriate New Yorker now living in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Richard Shindell is a meticulous craftsman of song, whose six studio albums and one live recording have been revered by critics and fans alike. Innovative, original and occasionally spiritual, Shindell's songs weave tales that interchangeably champion the downtrodden, exalt the disaffected or wax empathetic to those lost to society's fringes. From his first record, Sparrow's Point (1992) to the newest album Vuelta (2004), Shindell has demonstrated a penchant for songwriting at once passionate and profound. His songs are often slowly and painstakingly crafted until honed to perfection. Conversely, he is also capable of writing tunes that are simply clever and amusing.
"Shindell is a master builder of songs, yet always leading listeners toward the emotional essence of the moment or character he is evoking. As with all master craftsmen, knowing what to leave out is as important to him as what he puts in. Shindell has uncanny sense of the theater of a song, building his ballads sparely and subtly, set to sweeping graceful melodies." - The Boston Globe
"Mr. Shindell has been building a following on the solo-folkie circuit through the 1990's... At times, his voice recalls James Taylor, Gordon Lightfoot or Michael Stipe; he stretches words as if he's thinking hard about what they represent. The tone is reflective, but the dilemmas and disappointments couldn't be more vivid." - The New York Times |
